The Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley has officially sealed its America 250 Time Capsule, preserving stories of hope, faith, and transformation for future generations as part of the nationwide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Installed in the ceiling of the Mission, the time capsule will remain sealed until July 2051, when it will be opened by a future generation of Rescue Mission staff. An engraved plaque, to be installed next month, will mark its location and remind future staff and visitors of the treasure hidden above.

Inside the airtight capsule are dozens of meaningful items contributed by staff members, volunteers, donors, board members, clients, churches, and community supporters. The collection includes handwritten letters, personal testimonies, photographs, prayer cards, event memorabilia, publications, awards, and other keepsakes that tell the story of the Mission’s ministry and the lives God has changed through it.

“The contents of this time capsule represent far more than memorabilia,” said Lynn Wyant, Chief Development Officer. “They tell the story of a community coming together to offer hope, demonstrate compassion, and transform lives through the love of Christ. We are honored to preserve these memories for those who will open the capsule 25 years from now.”

Over the past several months, the Rescue Mission invited anyone whose life has been impacted by the organization to submit a message to the future. Contributors shared personal stories, words of encouragement, photographs, and reflections on how the Mission has influenced their lives and the Mahoning Valley community.

When the capsule is opened in 2051, those future generations will discover more than a collection of artifacts. They will see the faithfulness of God at work through the generosity of a caring community and the lives of people who found hope during difficult seasons.

“We hope those who open this capsule will see more than a snapshot of 2026,” Wyant said. “We hope they will see a community that cared for its neighbors, celebrated lives changed, and faithfully pointed people to the hope found in Jesus Christ.”

Sealed on July 31, 2025 to be opened in July of 2051, the America 250 Time Capsule Project reflects the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley’s ongoing commitment to serving neighbors experiencing homelessness, hunger, and hardship while preserving the stories that have defined its ministry for generations. Since 1893, the Mission has proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ while providing shelter, meals, and life-changing programs for individuals and families in need throughout the Mahoning Valley.
